4 Panthers wrestlers fall, Petranek wins

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva's Seth Petranek wrestles Friday at the Class A state individual tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL — Seth Petranek was the lone New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva wrestler to notch an opening-round win Friday in the Class A individual state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Petranek, the Panthers’ 189-pounder beat Border West’s Wylie Pullis 7-1 after having control the entire match. The Panthers’ 119-pounder Dustin Esplan, 125-pounder David Lassahn, 135-pounder Brandon LeBlanc and 140-pounder Jacob Staloch all lost.

“We felt pretty good about Petranek’s draw coming in,” Panthers coach Paul Cyr said “He did a nice job but laid a little too much on the bottom. It was a nice win.”
