Back-to-back homers power Tigers

Aaron Klatt and Cole Sorenson hit back-to-back home runs Friday, and Sorenson gave up one hit for the Albert Lea Tigers baseball team in a 6-0 win at the Winona Winhawks.

The win was the Tigers’ (7-2, 7-2 Big Nine) first in over a week as the team was swept Monday in a doubleheader to Rochester Century and had its game against Winona moved from Thursday to Friday due to weather.

The wait was well worth it as Sorenson led the Tigers at the plate and on the mound. Sorenson finished 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs and gave up one hit while walking none and striking out 11.

“Sorenson had complete control on the mound tonight,” Tigers coach Joe Sczublewski said. “He had a fantastic performance for us.”

After producing only two runs over its last three games, the Tigers opened Friday’s game with a flurry of offense. Connor Kortan scored Ethan Abben on a sacrifice fly in the first inning before Klatt and Sorenson hit back-to-back solo home runs.

“It was nice to get an early lead,” Sczublewski said. “Our middle of the order was pretty strong today.”

After a scoreless second inning, the Tigers doubled its run total in the third with clutch two-out hitting. With two outs, Kortan hit a single to left field and moved to third base on a double from Klatt. Sorenson then cleared the bases with a triple off the outfield wall and scored on the next play.

Sorenson, meanwhile, gave up the Winhawks’ (3-4, 3-3) lone hit in the first inning — an infield chopper that led to a close play at first — before retiring the next 20 batters.

Klatt finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Kortan was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ethan Abben also notched a hit for the Tigers.

The Tigers play again at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Rochester Mayo (2-3, 2-2) at Hayek Field.
