Sports Memories for April 24

50 years ago – 1961

The Albert Lea High School tennis team defeated Blue Earth 5-2 and remained undefeated at 2-0. Winning singles matches for the Tigers were Dave Boyum, Curt Pickavance, Gene Hanson and Ray Sorenson. Boyum and Pickavance won in a doubles match.

In their season and Big Nine Conference opener the Albert Lea High School baseball team defeated Northfield 3-0. Dick Oliphant allowed only one hit in seven innings for the Tigers.

The Minnesota Twins improved their season record to 5-1 with a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. Jim Katt was the winning pitcher, Lennie Green had four hits and Jim Lemon hit a home run for the Twins.

25 years ago – 1986

Lynette Vanek won her fourth game of the season as the Glenville softball team defeated Ellendale-Geneva/New Richland-Hartland 9-1. Kim Anderson and Jern Allison each had two hits for Glenville.

The Albert Lea girls’ golf team defeated Rochester Mayo 199-218. Scorers for Albert Lea were medalist Jana Hellie (47), Shellie Rice and Carrie Raiche (50) and Connie Schliep (52).

In a triangular track meet, the Albert Lea boys’ team finished second with 56 points to the winners 81 by Rochester Mayo. Winners for the Tigers were sophomore Steve Bangh in the long jump, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, Mike Kropp in the 100-meter dash, Scott Westcott in the pole vault and Greg Deyak in the high jump.

In Border League baseball, Emmons defeated Bricelyn 6-5. Ross Thompson was the winning pitcher and also had two hits for Emmons.

10 years ago – 2001

The Albert Lea girls’ track team defeated New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 187-153. Winners for Albert Lea were Angie Schumacher in the 800-meter run, Jane Skrlin in the 3,200-meter run and Anne Larson in the long jump.

In their home opener the, Albert Lea softball team defeated Rochester John Marshall 2-1. Rachel Chapek had two hits for Albert Lea.

David Dahl and Eagen Mattson had three hits each for the Albert Lea baseball team in their 11-10 win over Waseca.
