50 years ago – 1961
Wells won the Albert Lea invitational track and field meet with 85.5 points to Albert Lea High School’s 64 and Freeborn with 48. Individual winners for Wells were Dan Schreiber in the 440-yard dash, Dan Roberts in the 880-yard run and Gerald Sonnek in the discus. Steve Claybourn won the shot put, and Dave Palmer the broad jump for ALHS. Placing first for Freeborn was Allan Beach in the 100-yard dash and the 220-yard dash.
Local area graduates playing varsity sports at Mankato State College included Phil Black in golf, Cy Wolfe in baseball and Jim Brown in track from ALHS and Bob James in tennis from Alden.
The ALHS golf team defeated Northfield 150-171. Scoring for the Tigers were Roger Peterson and Dick Jones with 36 each, Steve Shea with 37 and Bob Kline 41.
25 years ago – 1986
The ALHS girls golf team defeated Winona 196-271. Gayle Vangen was the medalist with a 48 for Albert Lea, Shellie Rice had and Tiffany Freese had 49 and Jana Hellie shot 52 for Albert Lea.
Freeborn improved their Border League baseball record to 6-0 with a 16-4 win over Winnebago. Peter Schuster was the winning pitcher. Matt Stenzel had four hits and Toby Koziolek grand slam home run for Freeborn.
The Alden-Conger softball team defeated Mapleton 7-6 and raised their season record to 4-0. Penny Becker was the winning pitcher.
Medalist Brian Knudsen (77), Kurt Hoyne (78), Steve Lee (80) and Mike Nelson (82) led ALHS to a 316 – 322 golf victory over Owatonna.
10 years ago – 2001
Erin Anderson pitched the win and Kelli Schlaak had two hits for the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva softball team in their 5-2 win over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.
Andy Stensrud, a 1997 graduate of Lake Mills High School, signed to play professional football with the Arizona Cardinals.
The ALHS baseball team defeated Austin 9-8 in eight innings and raised their record to 3-1. Isaac Walton and David Dahl each had three hits for the Tigers.
The ALHS boys golf team defeated Austin 313-315. Scores for the Tigers were Josh Jones (74), Ian Breuer (77), Matt Tubbs (78) and Adam Boelter (84).
