Two men transporting more than 4 pounds of cocaine and methamphetamine in February on Interstate 90 were sentenced in Freeborn County District Court Friday to a suspended prison sentence and probation.
Jesus Ivan Lopez-Torres, 22, and Antonio Melecio Sanchez-Hernandez, 34, are expected to be deported back to Mexico because they are in the country illegally.
However, if Immigrations and Customs Enforcement does not deport the two men, then Lopez-Torres will be required to serve 86 months in prison and Sanchez-Hernandez will be required to serve 74 months in prison.
If the men are deported and then re-enter the country illegally, they will be required to serve the term. They will be under unsupervised probation for 30 years.
Third Judicial District Court Judge Edward W. Bearse sentenced the men. In the absence of a second judge at the Freeborn County Courthouse, Bearse and other 3rd District judges have filled in.
Both men pleaded guilty to first-degree drug possession, a felony, in April. They were arrested Feb. 15, after being pulled over by a Minnesota State Patrol trooper on Interstate 90 near the Minnesota Highway 13 exit.
Court reports stated the men were initially pulled over because of numerous traffic violations; however, during the stop, the trooper noted several other characteristics consistent with drug trafficking.
The trooper ultimately found three packages taped with electrical tape to the inside of the vehicle’s battery container, court documents state.
One package contained 506 grams of methamphetamine, one contained 1.138 kilograms of cocaine and the last contained 560 grams of cocaine. The total weight was over 2 kilograms of powder.
According to the trooper, the two men admitted to delivering the drugs from Phoenix where they stayed at the Super 8 motel.
