Man dies after being burned

An 86-year-old Albert Lea man died Thursday from injuries he sustained at his home on Wednesday while trying to fill a lighter with lighter fluid.
According to a news release, Albert Lea police and paramedics with Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea were called to 514 Ulstad Ave. just after 1:36 p.m. Wednesday.
When authorities arrived, they found the man, identified as Gordon Lyle Hanson, to be severely burned on his body.
Police officers stated most of Hanson’s body from his waist up had been burned.
It is unclear if the man was holding a cigarette at the time the fluid lit or exactly how the actual fire began.
Officers spoke to Hanson who told them he had been filling his lighter.
Nothing in the house had caught fire.
Preliminary reports from the medical examiner’s office, according to the release, indicate the incident was accidental in nature.
The complete results of the autopsy are expected in two to three weeks.
Hanson died at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea on Thursday.
Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea is assisting the family with Hanson’s funeral arrangements.
