Officials shouldn’t quit mid-term

In the June 10, 2011, issue of the Tribune the editor had an editorial titled, “Please don’t run, Sarah Palin.” In this editorial he reminds us how Palin quit her job as governor of Alaska in order to spend her time in the Lower 48.
We had a similar situation here in Albert Lea. One of our councilmen quit his job in Albert Lea. One of our councilmen quit his job in order to run for mayor. When Palin quit there already was a lieutenant governor in Alaska to take her place. It didn’t cost the taxpayers anything. Here in Albert Lea when our mayor resigned his position as a councilman we the taxpayers had to pay the cost of electing a new councilmen.
It is my feeling that whenever a vacancy occurs for a elected position in our city government during mid-term, the council should appoint someone to complete the term. Elections are expensive. It has been my observation that whenever the council appoints someone to complete a term in City Hall they find someone us taxpayers can approve of.
I do not plan to vote for Sarah Palin, but it will not be because she quit her job in the middle of the term.
