50 years ago — 1961
Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins homered for the American League in their 5-4 loss to the National League in the 1961 All-Star baseball game.
In the West Subdistrict American Legion baseball tournament, Glenville defeated Spring Valley 4-0. Glen Jensen and Ed Munson combined to hurl a no-hitter for Glenville.
Emil Stenzel recorded 16 strikeouts for Freeborn in their 10-2 won over Kiester in a V-8 League amateur baseball game.
Northside defeated Morin 6-1 in a midget league baseball game. Winning pitcher Jim Bratvold threw a one-hitter and Rick Swanson had a double and a triple for Northside.
25 years ago — 1986
The Albert Lea Post 56 American Legion baseball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 10-1 victory over New Richland. Chet Knutson pitched a no-hitter for Albert Lea.
Bert Blyleven pitched his sixth complete game of the season and Roy Smalley homered for the Minnesota Twins in their 5-0 won over the New York Yankees.
The American League defeated the National League 3-2 in the 1986 All-Star game. Frank White and Lou Whitaker homered for the A.L. This was only the second victory in the last 15 games for the American League.
10 years ago — 2001
The Albert Lea Eagles U-17 soccer team defeated Minneapolis United 1-0 on a Josh Johnson goal. In their second game of the week they defeated Orono 4-2. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Paul Kelly with two, Taylor Zimmerman and Josh Johnson.
The Albert Lea Elks U-9 boys soccer team won their league with a 7-1-2 record. Team members were Andy Kjos, Sam Matheson, Luke Thompson, Logan Tufte, Lars Gjersvik, Callen Pirsig, Adam Flategraft, Cameron Hove, Joe Leland, Casey Marka, Daniel Edwards, Aaron Thomas and Davis Thomas. Coaches were Scott Pirsig, Terry Gjersvik and Paul Marka.
