PLYMOUTH — A proposal to house a mosque in downtown Plymouth will advance to the city council next week despite some community tension.
The city’s planning commission held a public hearing on the issue Wednesday that occasionally grew heated. About 200 people attended.
Commissioners tried to limit the discussion to logistics such as parking and building access. They cut off a number of opponents who invoked the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and said “aiding the enemy is treason.”
Supporters included a Muslim man who said he enjoyed living in the community and wanted a place near his home to worship. A non-Muslim man also said a local mosque would give him the chance to visit and learn from the people there.
