The Big Island BBQ State Championship highlights the weekend in Albert Lea. As of Tuesday 62 teams were registered to compete. The annual event takes place the last weekend of August at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.

The event goes from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are only 300 tickets available, starting at 5:45 p.m., to taste chicken wings and chili on Friday night. The tickets are $15. However, entrance to the competition to simply see the sights and smell the smells is free. People can enjoy barbecue foods from vendors and entertainment by The Cruisers. The event is a fundraiser for the Big Island Rendezvous held each year in October at Bancroft Bay Park.
