KIESTER — For more than 20 years, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester has been providing a local soup and pie supper and a bake sale to their congregation and the local community.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the tradition continues at the Lutheran church located at 605 W. State St.

“We’ve done this event for many years,” church secretary Mary Thrond said. “We’ve always had attendance outside of the church membership.”

The women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America will host the supper, which will feature homemade soups and pies.

Community members are welcomed to test their palate on soups and stews such as chili, vegetable beef soup and wild rice soup.

After the soup course of the meal the next step is homemade pies. Thrond noted that there will be a large variety of homemade treats.

“It runs like clockwork now,” Thrond said. “It’s well-planned-out, and we have a good plan.”

Thrond, who is also a member of the women’s group, said the meal usually brings in more than 150 people from the surrounding communities and she doesn’t expect this year to be any different.

She hopes that while people enjoy the food they will also be able to take the time to meet new people and use the time for fellowship.

New to this year will be the Rev. Bonnie Roys. Roys began as the interim pastor at the church on Sept. 15, and this will be her first community gathering as the church’s pastor.

Before the supper there will also be a bake sale beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the church hall.

During the bake sale they will also draw for the quilt raffle. The women’s group has been selling raffle tickets for the past few weeks and will give away a quilt made by a member of their own group.

When the event is completed the women’s group will make sure the revenue will find its way to a worthy cause.

“The funds raised will be used to give various local groups in need, our support,” Thrond said. “Groups usually request our assistance.”
