Northwood driver charged in death of girl walking to bus

NORTHWOOD, Iowa — The driver of a pickup truck accused of hitting a 7-year-old girl who was walking to a stopped school bus in rural Worth County was charged Wednesday with vehicular homicide charges tied to the incident.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Kadyn Halverson, of rural Kensett, on May 10 was walking to a school bus on Raven Road in Worth County when Aaron Dwayne Gunderson, 31, of Northwood, was traveling southbound in a red Chevrolet Silverado.

Gunderson allegedly failed to stop for the flashing lights and extended stop sign of the school bus and then struck Halverson, before continuing southbound, without stopping at the scene of the crash.

Halverson died at the scene as a result of injuries.

The incident took place May 10.

Gunderson was charged Wednesday with two counts of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in death. One of the counts of vehicular homicide involves allegedly being intoxicated at the time of the crash.

He’s being held in the Worth County jail on $85,000 bond.
