A 26-year-old St. Paul man is facing a first-degree drug charge after a state trooper reportedly found 2 ounces of methamphetamine in his trunk during a recent traffic stop on Interstate 35 near the border of Freeborn County and Steele counties.
According to court documents, Justin Tyler Truong was pulled over by a state trooper just before 2 p.m. Aug. 26 north of mile 25 on I-35. He was initially pulled over for a lane-change violation.
Reports stated at that time the trooper was aware there was an informational alert about Truong — which stated he had a green backpack with drugs in his vehicle — however, that alert did not independently furnish grounds to justify a seizure.
When Truong was pulled over, he was reportedly shaking and acting nervous about the stop. When he was told he would only be getting a warning, his nervousness did not subside, but instead reportedly got worse.
As this continued, the trooper began asking additional questions, which Truong was not able to answer, according to reports.
Eventually, the trooper asked for consent to search the vehicle, to which Truong reportedly denied. The trooper then retrieved his narcotics-detection dog, which reportedly indicated the presence of a drug in the right-rear door seam.
The trooper then searched the vehicle and found a green backpack in the trunk with a digital scale.
Inside a pair of socks he reportedly found baggies containing white powder, which appeared to be meth.
Truong indicated he had previously been in prison on a methamphetamine-related charge.
He is being held in the Freeborn County jail on a $100,000 bail. The first-degree charge is a felony charge.
He is next scheduled to appear in Freeborn County District Court on Sept. 26.
