Memorial services for Raymond Merle Katzung, age 87, of Albert Lea, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mark Niethammer will officiate. Interment will be at Mansfield Township (Schneider) Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. To sign the guest book go to www.bayviewfuneral.com.
Raymond died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society.
Raymond Merle Katzung was born July 25, 1924, to Barney Louis and Maletta Elizabeth (Hintz) Katzung in Albert Lea. Ray grew up in Albert Lea where he attended and graduated from Albert Lea High School. On July 28, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. Raymond was united in marriage to Helen Marie Bickford on May 4, 1947, at Salem Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. He worked for many years for the U.S. Postal Service. Ray was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, photographing Albert Lea history and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his children, Nancy (James) Devine, of Plymouth; Brad (Claire) Katzung, of Edmond, Okla.; and Reid (Karen) Katzung of Mandan, N.D.; grandchildren, Lauren, Jennifer, Melissa and Christopher; step-grandchildren, Tonia and Dannielle; step-great-grandchildren, McKayla, Drew, Luke, Alyssa, Harrison and Marah; sisters, Mary (Paul) Thompson, of Albert Lea; and Bette (Lowell) Tonding, of St. James, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Zitterow. of St. Paul; and Judy (Gary) Johnson, of Ellendale; and many nieces and nephews.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; parents, Barney and Maletta Katzung; and sister-in-law. Joan (John) Edwards.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Salem Lutheran Church or a charity of the donors choice.
