Funeral services for Craig Bernard Hemmingsen, 63, of Owatonna, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden. The Rev. Greg Ofsdahl will officiate. Interment will be at the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Craig Bernard Hemmingsen died on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at the Owatonna Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident.
Craig Hemmingsen, the son of Bernard and Lois Hemmingsen, was born on Sept. 22, 1948, in Albert Lea. He grew up in Alden and was a 1966 graduate of Alden-Conger High School. He graduated from Austin Junior College in 1968 and married Nancy Jo Reindal on Oct. 4, 1969. They celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year. Craig started as a salesman in the shoe department at the J.C. Penney’s Albert Lea store even before earning his business degree. He worked for the company in a number of management positions for the next 34 years, retiring from his final position as store manager in Ottumwa, Iowa, in 2002. He was an active member of the Ottumwa community, serving on a number of boards, and was instrumental in bringing the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to Southeastern Iowa. Craig and Nancy returned to Minnesota in 2002, where Craig began working for Cabela’s in Owatonna. Craig was an avid conservationist who enjoyed hunting and fishing, growing, preserving and selling vegetables at area farmers markets and spending time with his family.
Craig is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Jennifer (Paul Seeman) and granddaughter, Nan, of Iowa City, Iowa; son, Christopher, of Hugo; mother, Lois Hemmingsen, of Alden; brother, Rick (Mary) Hemmingsen, of Independence, Mo.; brother, Kevin (Terese), of Wabasha; brother, Scott (Tanya), of Alden; mother-in-law, Gladys Reindal; five sisters-in-law and their families; and several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Hemmingsen; his brother, Tracy Hemmingsen; and his father-in-law, Owen Reindal.
