Darryl Meyer, 68, San Antonio, Fla.

A military memorial service and burial for Kiester native, Darryl E. Meyer, was held on Aug. 19, 2011, at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

Darryl passed away Aug. 6, 2011, at Melech Hospice House after a short but courageous fight with cancer.

Darryl was born Feb. 20, 1943, at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea to Orville G. and Mildred M. (Passer) Meyer. He was raised on his parents’ farm just northeast of Kiester. He graduated from Kiester High School in May 1961 and was very active in all sport activities. He is still remembered in the community as class valedictorian, homecoming king and school record-setting athlete. Darryl attended Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, graduating in May of 1965 with a degree in accounting and business.

After college graduation, he lived in Chicago, Ill., where he worked for a public accounting firm until he was drafted into the Army in 1967. He subsequently went to Officer’s Candidate School and was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division in Seoul, Korea, for 13 months. He was then transferred to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he met his wife Rosemarie Bartussek Malone. They were married in 1969.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Darryl and Rosemarie returned to Chicago, and Darryl resumed work with the public accounting firm. In 1976, they moved to Dallas, Texas, to work for another accounting firm and remained there until 2001 when they moved to San Antonio, Fla., where he became chief financial officer for a company that had 12 franchise auto repair stores. He retired in April of 2011.

Darryl was an avid baseball and golf fan.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Rosemarie; their children: Kimberly, Christine, Raymond and Henry; his mother, Mildred Meyer, of Stewartville; his brothers: Lowell and his wife, Sharon, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Warren and his wife, Eileen, of Rapid City, S.D., Blaine and his wife Deborah of Folsom, Calif., and Gerri and his wife Jeanne of Owatonna; granddaughters: Elizabeth and Catherine; and nieces: Kerry, Laura and Rachel; as well as many aunts, uncles cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orville; his uncles: Ellwood Meyer, Roger Passer and Orville Goemann; and his grandparents: Same and Marie Passer and Emil and Emma Meyer.
