MINNEAPOLIS — A Mankato man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for driving the getaway car during a robbery at the Minnesota State University credit union.

U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz called 24-year-old Anthony Akiti a “bully” who had “no regard for the law” at sentencing Friday.

A jury convicted Akiti of one count of armed credit union robbery and one count of obstruction of justice.

According to the evidence, Akiti drove the getaway car after co-defendant Chop Nguot Tang stole $17,000 from the credit union at gunpoint last December. Prosecutors say Akiti concealed some of the money in his apartment and, after his arrest, directed his wife to get rid of it.

Tang was sentenced to five years in prison last July on one count of armed bank robbery.
