MASON CITY, Iowa — Mason City moved a step closer to possible selection as a Blue Zones community with its invitation Tuesday to submit a final application, local officials reported.
“Out of 84 communities that applied, 25 were to be selected to make a full application,” said Angie Determan, Mason City volunteer coordinator.
The detailed applications must be submitted by Jan. 4, 2012.
Albert Lea went through a citywide makeover by the Blue Zones organization in 2009.
Ten communities will be selected as demonstration sites for The Blue Zones Project, a project sponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Healthways.
Mason City Mayor Eric Bookmeyer expressed gratitude to citizens for their support of the Blue Zones concept.
“They made this happen,” he said.
Bookmeyer also credited the City Council for its unanimous decision to initiate the process.
“I think it’s a ground-breaking project, one that would help continue the momentum as to the viability of our community, including wellness, economic sustainability and the progress we’re continuing to make,” Bookmeyer said.
A decision on the selection will be made between Feb. 27 and March 16.
Blue Zones Project communities will receive federal and state assistance in developing and implementing a blueprint for making permanent environmental, policy and social network changes that transition people into healthier behaviors.
