50 years ago – 1961

• Tackle Frank Fretheim was named “Player of the Year for the Albert Lea High School football team” by the Quarterback Club of Albert Lea.

• Named to the Border League All-Conference Football Team from Alden were Gary Schoenrock, Albert Allen, Howard Jacobs, Mark Newman and Jerry Jahnke; from Kiester were Robert Seljeseth, Lowell Meyer and Arthur Albertson; from Freeborn were Alan Beach, William Hermon and Steven Langrud; from Bricelyn were Bruce Lorenz and Ronald Morris; from Emmons was Bob Berg; from Delavan were Donald Sackreiter and Keith Peterson; from Elmore were Ronald Kurth and Stanley McMormick; from Frost were Jeffrey Njoes, Milo Olsen, Marshall Olsen and Barry Njoes.

• The Minnesta Gophers defeated the top ranked Michigan State Spartans 13-0 in a Big Ten Conference football game. The Gophers improved to 4-0 in conference play.

 

25 years ago – 1986

• Alden-Conger defeated Ruthton 12-0 in a quarter final game in Class Nine-Man Minnesota State Football Tournament. Quarterback Kevin Newman threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Johnson and a 28-yard touchdown pass to Kent Klocek.

• The Albert LeaVo-Tech women’s volleyball team won the Southeastern Regional title and competed in Minnesota State Tourament. Team members included Jodie Manderscheid from Lake Wilson, Denise Murra from Bricelyn, Denise Peterson from Blooming Prairie, Debbie Seiffert from Howard Lake, Darcy Zrucky from Austin and Kerry Rutfort from Waterville-Elysian.

• The Minnesota Gophers football team defeated Wisconsin 27-20 and improved to 4-2 in the Big Ten Conference. Quarterback Rickey Foggie threw touchdown passes of 27 and 64 yards and freshman Darrel Thompson ran for 117 yards for the Gophers.

 

10 years ago – 2001

• Cherri Larson of Albert Lea bowled a 300 game in the Fine O’Clock Shadows League at Holiday Lanes in Albert Lea.

• Fredericksburg defeated Northwood-Kensett 28-7 in the quarter final round in the Iowa football tournament and finished the season with a 10-1 record.

• Rock Valley defeated the Lake Mills volleyball team 3-1 in the opening round of Class “A” Iowa State Tournament. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 32-7-1.
