BRICELYN — Two men walked away unharmed Tuesday afternoon after the semitrailer they were riding in was struck by a United Pacific Railroad train east of Bricelyn.
Faribault County Sheriff’s Office reports state the semi, driven by Shannon Lee Sunken, 35, of Blue Earth, was eastbound on Faribault County Road 2 about a quarter mile east of Bricelyn when it drove across the railroad crossing and was struck by a train headed southeast.
The rail line connects Mason City, Iowa, to Fairmont, and passes through Blue Earth and Bricelyn.
Sunken reportedly told deputies he stopped at the stop sign prior to the crossing but did not see the train. His passenger, Nicholas Lee Cooen, 31, no address listed, stated Sunken rolled through the sign.
Reports indicated the train struck the trailer of the semi, owned by G&S Drainage of Blue Earth, which caused the semi and trailer to jackknife. A John Deere excavator on the trailer was thrown into the ditch and landed upside down.
The incident occurred just after 2:30 p.m.
The report listed Terry Dwayne McCaslin as the conductor of the train.
Reports indicate Sunken will be cited for a railroad stop sign violation.
