Vernon Levene Swenson, 92, of Wells, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Parkview Care Center in Wells. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Wells. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. The Rev. Paul Woolverton will officiate and burial will take place in Dunbar Memorial Cemetery, Minnesota Lake Township, Faribault County. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is in charge of arrangements.
Vernon was born April 16, 1919, in rural New Richland, Waseca County, the son of Eddie and Alfreda (Youngberg) Swenson. On June 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Harriet Miller at the Dunbar Church, rural Wells.
He was a Cub Scout Leader, a cashier at Peoples State Bank, a bookkeeper at Wells Farmers Elevator and a type setter at the Wells Mirror. Vernon enjoyed bowling, woodworking and birds. He loved going fishing and camping. He would putter around and fix things in his basement. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Wells, where he was treasurer of the church, and head usher for many years.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Harriet; daughter, Marlene Culbertson of Wells; son, Randal (Deb) Swenson of Mendota Heights; grandchildren: Joshua Swenson of Eagan, Bill (Megan) Swenson of Okinawa, Japan, and Holly Swenson of Chicago, Ill.; great-granddaughters: Kaylee and Samantha Swenson of Eagan and Chloe Swenson of Okinawa, Japan. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Anna Swenson of Waseca, Lynne Swenson of New Richland and Dolores (Ray) Dahnert of Waseca; brother-in-law, Darold (Linda) Miller of Wells; and many nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Victor, Milton and David; son-in-law: Don Culbertson; and two grandchildren: Jason and Sarah Culbertson.
