Ice fishing and sleigh rides at the beach

Albert Lea’s Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club will host the 2012 Ice Classic with events starting at noon Sunday at Albert Lea’s City Beach.

Sleigh rides provided by Disabled American Veterans commander Todd Bergland will start at noon, and ice auger races go from noon to 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per auger with four classes. Food and beverages will be provided by the VFW Post No. 447. There will also be a bucket raffle for a Strike Master ice auger as well as many other prizes.

An ice fishing classic starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per hole with funds going toward the Take A Kid Fishing event and other youth programs. Prizes for largest fish are $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place.

Friday

• St. Theodore Catholic Church hosts a fish fry from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the church’s Marian Hall. Cost is $9 for adults, $3 for children under age 12 and free for children 3 and younger. Menu includes fish, shrimp, baked or mashed potatoes, cole slaw, rolls, ice cream sundaes and beverage.

• The Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce will host the Gourmet Auction at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 or two for $30. Call 373-3938 for reservations. Money raised goes to the annual Education Days at the Big Island Rendezvous and Festival and other community projects.

 

Saturday

• The Full Draw Archery Club will hold a youth program from 10 a.m. to noon at 133 S. Newton Ave. The program is open to the public and all ages are welcome. Equipment is furnished and instruction is available.

• The Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club hosts a Modern Tactics in Ice Fishing event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion. The free seminar features ice fishing pros Dan Houg and Ben Ekrew. Come check out the season’s newest products and learn some tips to get more fish. A free poker game will follow.

• Trent Romens performs at 7:30 p.m. at the Lighthouse Event Center in Albert Lea. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and $5 for students, and are available at Marshall Street Music, Hy-Vee or Stadheim Jewelers in Albert Lea and at Coffee House on Main in Austin.

 

Sunday

• The American Legion Honor Guard hosts a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion. Cost is $7 for all you can eat and children under age 6 are free. Menu includes biscuits and sausage gravy, fried eggs, peaches, orange juice, milk and coffee.

• The Sons of Norway will host a pannekaker breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $6. Menu includes Norwegian roll pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham, parsley potatoes, juice and coffee.

• Arc of Freeborn County will host a Dad’s Belgian waffle breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Cost is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for children age 6 to 12 and free for children age 5 and younger. Menu includes waffles with different flavored syrups, sausage links, milk, orange juice and coffee. All proceeds go to Arc’s programs and activities for people with disabilities in Freeborn County.

• The Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club hosts the 2012 Ice Classic starting at noon at City Beach.

• The Freeborn County Museum hosts an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. for the traveling exhibit “Electrifying Minnesota.” Admission is any donation, which will go to the museum’s building expansion fund.
