50 years ago — 1962

Advancing to the state wrestling tournament from Albert Lea were region champions Mike Callahan at 103 pounds, Paul Hanson (120) and Jeff Brooke (heavyweight) and region runner-up Rog Kittelson (127). Owatonna won the Region title with 84 points and the Tigers were second with 62 points.

Alice Meixell won the singles title and Marlene Overgaard and Shirlee Yokiel won the doubles title at the Albert Lea Women’s Bowling Association Tournament.

Lowell Syverson scored 18 points and Clair Flaten 12 to lead the Albert Lea basketball team to a 44-43 victory over Wells. Wells was led by Al Redman with 13 points and Ron Meyer with 10. The Tigers’ season record advanced to 12-3 and Wells dropped to 14-2.

 

25 years ago — 1987

The Alden-Conger wrestling team placed second in District A2. District winners from A-C were Pat Schultz at 126 pounds, Mike Allen (155), Kevin Newman (167) and Alex Thostensen (185). Schultz’s season record stood at 23-0.

In the opening round of the District 2A girls’ basketball tournament, New Richland-Hartland defeated Emmons 72-59 and Alden-Conger defeated Freeborn 49-43. Cheryl Miller scored 21 points and Jill Johnson 15 for NR-H. Emmons was led by Heidi Shaw with 19 and Lisa Sveen with 15. A-C was led by JoAnn Thomschin with 13 points.

 

10 years ago — 2002

Individuals advancing to the state swimming meet from Albert Lea were: Mitch Johnson, 100- and 200-yard freestyle, Ben Lindeman, 200 and 500 freestyle, Colton Jensen, 500 freestyle, Ben Matheson and Ben Schreiber, 100 breaststroke. Also advancing were Ethan Berg, Schreiber, Justin Elwood and Ryan Lowe in the 200 medlay relay; Berg, Johnson, Jensen and Lindeman in the 400 freestyle relay and Lowe, Johnson, Matheson and Lindeman in the 200 freestyle relay.

Awards presented to the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team from the Big Ten coaches and media included Lindsay Whalen, the Big Ten Player of the Year, Janel McCarville, Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Brenda Oldfield, Big Ten Coach of the Year.
