The Albert Lea boys’ and girls’ track and field teams are competing at Rochester Mayo today in the Big Nine Conference meet.

Junior Chrissy Monson will be working toward her fourth straight win in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run.

“Chrissy is healthy and her training has been impressive lately,” Tigers distance and pole vault coach Lon Nelson said. “I predict another couple of wins for her.”

Monson’s best time this season is 5 minutes and 15 seconds in the 1,600 and 11 minutes and 43 seconds in the 3,200.

“She’s a few seconds off her title time, but if anyone can dominate at the end of the season, it’s Chrissy.”

Last year Monson ran times of 5 minutes and .99 seconds and 11 minutes and 11 seconds.

As it stands, the girls’ Big Nine record in the 1,600-meter run is 5 minutes and .14 seconds and was set by Lani Granowski in 1979.

“I can’t predict any times for the races, but with the ideal weather for distance running, the times will be fast,” Nelson said.

Nelson and Monson both feel that her strongest competitors will be Jordan Bucher from Rochester Mayo and Madison Overby from Austin.

Monson said Bucher is a strong competitor and since the meet is at her home track, she’s going to want the title.

And even though Monson hasn’t faced Overby since the cross country season, she feels it will be a good matchup.

“I haven’t really been challenged much so I’m hoping my times will drop for the races and I’ll be able to see my full potential,” Monson said.
