No walleye for Gov. Dayton

WACONIA — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton didn’t catch a walleye for the second straight year during the season opener.

Dayton, who has never hidden his lack of angling prowess, nonetheless noted the warm, sunny weather and said he had “a great morning.”

Dayton did catch a morning sunfish on a leech while walleye fishing with area guide Travis Frank.

Dayton fished from midnight to 2 a.m. Saturday on Lake Waconia and again from about 8 a.m. to 10.

He says he saw a lot of nibblers but couldn’t catch any.

Frank noted the high sun and calm winds made for challenging conditions.
