 50 years ago – 1962

• In church league softball Methodist defeated Emmons Lutheran 8-7. Dave Christianson hit two home runs and pitched a four-hitter in a losing cause for Emmons Lutheran.

• Dick Jones from Albert Lea High School was co-medalist with a 151 at the Minnesota State Golf Tournament. The Tigers finished second with a score of 488 to Red Wing’s score of 461.

• The Cabin Bar defeated the Aragon 12-1 in an Albert Lea City Softball League game. Winning pitcher Ken Heine threw a three-hitter for the Cabin Bar and Murph Berg hit two homeruns and Al Berg And Joe Carlin one each.

• The Minnesota Twins, behind the five-hit pitching of Jim Kaat and two RBIs each by George Banks, defeated the Kansas City Athletics 7-0.

25 years ago – 1987

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Baseball Team from ALHS were Brad Tullberg and Chris Howell. Tim Butts of the Tigers received honorable mention.

• Qualifying for the Minnesota State Track and Field championships in Class AA from ALHS were Greg Deyak in the 110 meter high hurdles and Steve Bangh in the 400-meter dash.

• Mike Yonkey of Wells-Easton High School won the shut put and the discus in Class A at the Minnesota Track and Field Tournament. Yonkey also won the discus as a sophomore at the state tournament.

10 years ago – 2002

• Qualifying for the Minnesota State Track and Field girls’ tournament were the following; from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva – Camille Kyte in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Nicole Lonning in the shot put and Kalisha Anthony in the pole vault; Alden-Conger: Megan Jensen in the 1600- and 3200-meter run.

• Casey Christenson of United South Central qualified in the 200- and 400-meter dashes for the Minnesota State Track and Field boys’ tournament.

• In their home opener the U-17 boys soccer team defeated Red Wing 3-2. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Brett Plantage, Jacob Clark and Jeremy Jacobson.
