Gavle to join ALHS HOF

The fourth person to be inducted into the Albert Lea Hall of Fame on Saturday will be Darrel Gavle.

Gavle is a 1967 graduate of ALHS who played football, basketball and threw in track and field.

He was co-captain on the football team and played on offense and defense.

Gavle was named to the First Team Big Nine Conference, First Team All-State WCCO radio, First Team All-State Minneapolis Tribune and honorable mention Prep All-American Football Team for the Coach & Athlete Magazine.

He was also co-captain on the basketball team, which had a record of 14-5 his senior year and tied for second-place in the Big Nine Conference.

During the basketball season Gavle averaged 14.5 points per game and was selected for the Big Nine Conference Second Team.

In track and field, he set a school record in the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 1 inch.

For college, Gavle attended Dartmouth. While at Dartmouth he was a three-year starter in football.

At the time, the team was ranked 14th in the nation with a record of 9-0.

Gavle will join seven others on Saturday at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club for the induction ceremony.

A four-person best shot golf tournament will start at 10:30 a.m. A silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. and a meal with guest speaker Eric Nyquist will be served at 6:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the Hall of Fame are donated to ALHS to reduce participation fees for high school athletes.
