50 years ago – 1962

• Hayward won their first game of the year 15-6 over Emmons in the amateur baseball State Line League. Jim Lair was the winning pitcher. Clayt Hatleli hit a grand slam home run and Jim Bellrichard a solo home run for Hayward.

• Mike Stiles threw a three-hitter for the Tribune in their 5-0 win over Queens in the Albert Lea Slow Pitch League.

• The Albert Lea VFW baseball team defeated Emmons 4-2 behind the three-hit pitching of Dick Wayne. Wayne and Larry Peterson each had two hits for Albert Lea.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• After five weeks of competition, the Green Lea Golf Course boys’ and girls’ teams captured the District 4 championship in the Minnesota Golf Association Junior play and advanced to Region 1 competition. Team members on the boys’ team were Brian Knudsen, Chad Adams, Dave Fligge, Mike Kroc and Al Christopherson. The girls’ team consisted of Joni Wright, Missy Boom and Lisa Christopherson.

• The Albert Lea American Legion baseball team defeated Owatonna 13-3. Steve Nelson hit a grand slam home run for Albert Lea. Chet Knutson was the winning pitcher. Nelson, Spencer Etienne and Chris Howell each had two hits for Albert Lea.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• The All-Star bowling team at Holiday Lanes in Albert Lea based on the five highest season averages for 2001-02 were the following: Don Breeden 230.87, Kenn Breamer 222.56, Dustin Barr 221.40, Loren Kaiser 220.76, Kraig Westendorf 219.73.

• The Albert Lea 18 and under girls’ fastpitch softball team swept a double header from Byron by the scores of 4-3 and 6-4. In game one Nicole Rafdal was the winning pitcher. Ashley Chrz hit an inside-the-park home run, and Jess Hanson had three hits. Steph Lackey picked up the win in game two. Jenny Hovendick and Stacie Thisius had two hits each.
