APPLE VALLEY — The Minnesota Zoo has held its final dolphin show, as popular animals are preparing to move to new homes.

The public will still be able to view Allie and Semo during a “farewell week” that runs Saturday through Sept. 9.

No shows are scheduled, but visitors will be allowed to see the dolphins and watch how they interact with trainers.

Dolphins have been part of the zoo since it opened in 1978. But salt water has taken a toll on the pool, and even with $4 million in planned repairs, director of biological programs Kevin Willis says it’s hard to get dolphins for the zoo.

Zoo officials haven’t decided what to put in the pool after it’s repaired. Short-term options include fish, sharks and stingrays.
