Ascension Lutheran Church Women

The Ascension Lutheran Church Women of ELCA held its annual meeting and all circles Bible study in Carlson Hall on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.

Co-President Caroline Sorenson opened the meeting. She shared information from the South East Minnesota Synod Women’s Retreat that was held Aug. 21 in Rochester at Assisi Heights. The following six members attending from Ascension were: Gayle Olson, Rosalyn Fossum, Sorenson, Phyllis Tomschin, Cindy Jensen and Lorraine Schaper.

Secretary’s report was given by Schaper and was approved as printed in the newsletter. Cheryl Venem gave the treasurer’s report.

A thank you note was read from Kylie Hauge thanking the church women for the senior graduation brunch and the quilt made by the quilting ladies.

Old business:

Venem gave a report on the Quest Night. Nineteen different churches were represented with approximately 109 attended.

A thank you note was received from the United Methodist Church Women and also from Charlotte Sevaldson for the Quest Night Invitation.

Kay Boyken read a thank you note from Mary Jo Jensen of East Freeborn Lutheran Church thanking the Esther Circle for their recent donation to the attic. Some 64 people have been helped so far.

The mission in Community report was given by Mary Boorsma.

Prayer coordinator, Elaine Struck, reported that a new list of prayer groups has been handed out, but she welcomes anyone else interested to call her.

Jane Samuelson has received a video she will present shortly on “Food Safety Guidelines.”

New business:

The Lutheran World Relief Van will be at First Lutheran on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. A motion was made by Alice Jensen and seconded by Fossum that the group give a donation toward shipping costs.

St. John’s Lutheran Home Auxiliary hosted annual benefit luncheon on Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the chapel. In addition to dine-in, there were drive-up services available.

An invitation received from Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home addressed as a thank you to all who make the funeral lunches possible. This appreciation luncheon was held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25 at Bayview.

Alice Jensen gave the report from the Nominating Committee. The following officers were elected for the coming year: Doris Guenthner and Denise Sandager, co-presidents; Lorraine Schaper, secretary; Cheryl Venem, treasurer; Joan Anderson, Mission in Growth; Ruth Furland, Mission in Action; Mary Boorsma, Mission in Community; and Elaine Struck, prayer coordinator.

Reminder Time and Talent Bazaar will be held on Nov. 3.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 14 in the Fireside Room

The Rev. Mark Boorsma led the Bible study from the September Gather.

Lunch was served by Esther Circle.
