DULUTH — Georgia-Pacific has permanently closed its hardboard plant in Duluth, putting about 140 employees out of work.

A company spokesman said the plant closed Friday afternoon.

Georgia-Pacific announced the plant closure Aug. 21 and said at that time it would be closed by the end of August.

Company spokesman Eric Abercrombie said the plant closed Friday because “it has gotten to the point where there was no more work to be done.” He said there are no plans to reopen the plant and Georgia-Pacific is working with the Workforce Development Center in Duluth to help the laid-off employees in finding other jobs.

The Atlanta-based company manufactures tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals.
