50 years ago – 1962

• Duane Blaska scored two touchdowns and Colin Versich kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Minnesota Gophers football team in their 17-0 win over Illinois.

• The Albert Lea High School football team defeated Winona 34-12. Mel Stensrud gained 166 yards in 32 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Tigers.

• The Ellendale football team tied Blooming Prairie for the Gopher Conference title with a 33-13 win over New Richland. Lyle Swearingen scored two touchdowns for Ellendale. Dave Flor scored both touchdowns for New Richland.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• Glenville-Emmons defeated Alden-Conger 3-0 by scores of 18-16, 15-11 and 15-7 in Gopher Conference volleyball. Lisa Szeen had 11 ace tips, and Jennifer Allison had 10 ace hits for G-E.

• The ALHS football team was defeated by Owatonna 28-10. Eric Palmer scored on a 26-yard run and Parnanen kicked a 36-yard field goal for the Tigers.

• The Minnesota Twins, after winning the first two games in Minnesota, lost the next three games at St. Louis by scores of 3-1, 7-2 and 4-2. The Twins won Game 6 at the dome 11-5 behind Kent Hrbek’s grand slam homerun. The Twins won the 1987 World Series with a 4-2 win in Game 7. Frank Viola won his second game in the series.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• United South Central defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 28-13 in a section quarterfinal game. Ben Wezell gained 83 yards in 14 carries for USC.

• The ALHS football team lost to Farmington 48-20 in a quarterfinal football game in Section 1AAA. Jason Kuipers gained 132 yards in 36 carries for the Tigers.

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference soccer team from ALHS were Jake Levison and Jeremy Jacobson. Receiving honorable mention were Brady Plantage and Jake Clark.

• In the opening round of district volleyball Lake Mills defeated North Central 3-0. Jenny Wilkinson had 18 kills for the Bulldogs.

• The Glenville-Emmons’ volleyball team shutout Alden-Conger 3-0. Alisa Rayman was 15-16 serving, had four aces and 10 kills. Kelly Yost was 10-11 serving and had four aces for G-E.
