FREDERIKA, Iowa — Two suspects were taken into custody Tuesday night following a bank robbery and police shooting in northeast Iowa.

The suspects were captured less than a mile north of Frederika just before 7 p.m. by Waterloo police following an all-day manhunt that included local and federal agencies.

Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain and Iowa State Patrol trooper Mark Domino were injured following the bank robbery. The suspects allegedly shot at the officers while fleeing from Maynard.

Cain was downgraded from life-threatening condition to critical condition Tuesday night and completed surgery. Domino was treated and released.

Trooper Bob Conrad said Cain was struck in the neck and hand and thumb by rifle shots, while Domino was struck in the right bicep.

The suspects ditched their getaway car near Frederika at about 12:20 p.m. and fled into a quarry area. They were armed with rifles, Conrad said.

Authorities said they would not release the names of the suspects until Wednesday.
