ST. PAUL — The St. Paul City Council could settle allegations of police brutality for $400,000.

A four-page settlement agreement before the council today does not acknowledge any wrongdoing on the part of police officers and directs the mother and son who sued the city not to discuss the case publicly.

Forty-eight-year-old Daniela Hobbs and her 28-year-old son, Larelle Steward, sued in federal court over an incident at their apartment in October 2010. Their lawsuit says Hobbs suffered burns from a flash grenade police deployed while searching for drugs. Steward suffered cuts to his face and a broken nose in the search. No drugs were found.

The brutality settlement would be tied with the largest ever paid by the city. A similar settlement was made in 2001.
