NORTHWOOD — The Lake Mills wrestling team won the Northwood-Kensett duals Saturday in Northwood with a 4-0 record.

It was the first time the Bulldogs have ever beat Byron in the championship dual.

“This was another huge win for us,” Bulldogs head coach Alex Brandenburg said. “I knew we had three huge hurdles to reach our goal of getting to the break undefeated.”

The other two hurdles that the Bulldogs overcame were wins over Sumner-Fredericksburg and Maple River.

“Just when I think we are going to lose a dual because we lose a toss up match or two, somebody new comes through with a huge win,” Brandenburg said.

He called Tyler Mary, a wrestler in the 285-pound class, the hero of the day because going into the final match Lake Mills lead 31-30.

According to Brandenburg, Mary executed a cross pick takedown to pin Byron’s Eli Johnson for the win.

“We worked on the cross pick this week in practice,” Brandenburg said. “Apparently Tyler was paying attention as his technique was perfect.”

After the duals, the Bulldogs improved to a 10-0 record.
