CHAMPLIN — The No. 4 Albert Lea wrestling team boosted its record to 16-1 by going 3-0 in dual action at the Champlin Park tournament Saturday.

The Tigers defeated Hibbing 62-21 in the first round, St. Francis 49-21 in the semifinals and Maple Grove 70-6 in the finals.

“It was a good weekend for us,” Albert Lea head wrestling coach Larry Goodnature said. “We got a lot of falls.”

Four Tigers pinned all of his opponents: Garrett Wangsness, Devin Nelson, Derek Samudio and Tristan Westerlund.

Westerlund earned the fastest and second-fastest falls for Albert Lea. He pinned Bo Blanske of St. Francis in 39 seconds, and he took down Billy Hebert of Maple Grove in 43 seconds.

Also going undefeated were Beau Johnsrud, Trevor Westerlund, Dakota Wangsness, Lucas Hansen and Tim Christianson.

“All of our wrestlers wrestled very well,” Albert Lea assistant coach Neal Skaar said. “We continue to press our opponents hard for the entire match and work aggressively for the fall.”

Next, the Tigers will host Owatonna at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. It will be Albert Lea’s third home meet of the season.
