GRAND FORKS, N.D. — St. Cloud State freshman Jonny Brodzinski scored two goals as the Mavericks beat North Dakota 3-1 on Friday to take over first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Sixteenth-ranked St. Cloud State (15-10-0, 12-5-0) entered the game tied with top-ranked Minnesota for the WCHA lead. The Gophers lost, leaving the Huskies alone in first place.
St. Cloud State took a 2-0 lead on goals by Brodzinski and Ben Hanowski in the first period against listless North Dakota, which managed just three shots on goal in the first period.
“I don’t think we had any energy and didn’t generate any energy throughout the game,” North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s always hard when you’re trying to get something going and you’re starting from a hole.”
North Dakota is 1-3-1 in its last five games. Corban Knight’s 19-game scoring streak came to an end for North Dakota, which took a season-low 16 shots on goal.
Brodzinski extended his point-scoring streak to 10 games. His second goal in the third period gave the Mavericks a 3-0
