A St. Ansgar, Iowa, woman was sentenced to up to five years of probation Thursday for using a false name to obtain prescription medication.

If Amy Kathryn Potter, 29, successfully completes her probation, the charge will be dismissed.

Potter must complete 40 hours of community service in the next 90 days, complete chemical dependency and psychological evaluations and complete a cognitive skills training, among other conditions, according to the sentencing order from Freeborn County District Court Judge Steve Schwab.

She also must not use or possess alcohol or controlled substances.

Court documents state Potter was arrested in September 2011 after a Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office detective received a call from a pharmacist at the Shopko pharmacy in Albert Lea. The pharmacist reportedly told the detective she had heard from Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea that Potter obtained a prescription for the painkiller Tramadol under a false name.

The detective discovered Potter had gone to the emergency room the day before using the same false name and was prescribed Norco tablets, which consist of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Potter reportedly filled the prescription at Walgreens in Albert Lea the same day.

The next day, she returned to the Albert Lea clinic and was prescribed Tramadol under the same name.

The prescription was sent to the Walmart pharmacy, but she was unable to fill the prescription because she could not show ID under that name. The prescription was then sent to Shopko and then lastly Walgreens, where the detective met up with her.

Court documents stated Potter told the detective she was only addicted to the Tramadol and had a history of abusing it.
