ST. PAUL — Theft victims, police and prosecutors are working to tighten Minnesota’s law on scrap metal sales.

An estimated 23 vehicles are stolen each day in Minnesota. And authorities say older cars are most often stolen for salvage money. Within hours of a theft, a vehicle can be crushed at a salvage yard. No title is needed if the vehicle is more than six years old.

Proponents of a change in the law say a five-day holding period is needed before older, undocumented vehicles can be crushed. They say better tracking of salvage metal sales is also needed.

Those in law enforcement plan to meet with leaders in the scrap industry April 5 to address prevention of vehicle and metal thefts.
