ST. PAUL — Three of five United South Central wrestlers earned a slot in the quarterfinals of the state tournament on Friday.
Dylan and Derek Herman both earned five-point wins by decision. Dylan (35-3) shut out Alex Engler (33-7) of Minneota 5-0 at 132 pounds, and Derek (36-4) beat Cole Hennnen (31-9) of Minneota 6-1 at 138 pounds.
In the quarterfinals, Dylan will wrestle Evan Woitalla (34-12) of Pierz, while Derek will face Hunter Retzlaff of Sibley East (36-7)
“Dylan and Derek really wrestled well,” USC head coach Marcus Eytcheson said. “We’ve got a theme: Don’t settle. We want them to wrestle for first.”
Colten Carlson also moved on to the second round with a win. He won by major decision over Noah Pesola of New York Mills, 13-3.
Logan Sonnek fell to Chase Northon of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in a heartbreaking 2-1 triple overtime decision.
“Logan wrestles with his heart on his sleeve,” Eytcheson said. “He was really excited for the tournament.”
Jacob Gonsalez lost to Shane Novak of New York Mills by pin, but he’ll get another chance to place through wrestlebacks.
“I’ll just wait for my opponent to make the mistakes,” Gonsalez said. “It’s very exciting and fun to be here.”
