AUSTIN — Austin police say the driver in a Wednesday morning vehicle theft, chase and crash reached speeds of 75 mph in Austin and blew through 12 to 15 stop signs before hitting a house.
According to Police Chief Brian Krueger, the officer backed off of the chase as it became dangerous. The driver of the stolen vehicle then hit a house at Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue Southwest, and concrete steps under the porch stopped the vehicle from going farther into the home. Two people were in the home, but neither of them were injured.
Police still have not confirmed if the chase and crash is linked to a stolen 1996 Oldsmobile Bravada found in an Albert Lea ditch with a broken windshield and windows shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday. Krueger said that vehicle was stolen from behind the Hiawatha Bar in Austin at about 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The high-speed chase with the truck then began at Austin’s Kwik Trip on Fourth Street Northwest shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Police have not yet released information about any suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.
