ST. CLOUD — St. Cloud State University will rename its hockey arena after renowned coach Herb Brooks.
The coach made famous for guiding the U.S. Olympic hockey team to gold in 1980, also helped spearhead the St. Cloud State’s men’s hockey team’s move to the NCAA Div. 1 level, among many other coaching accomplishments. Brooks died in a car accident in 2003.
The original plan was to sell naming rights for the renovated arena, which is in the first phase of the nearly $15 million upgrade. Instead, the success of the hockey team in the last season caused university officials to rethink that idea.
Dan Brooks says his father would have been honored to have the building named after him.
