50 years ago – 1963
• The New Richland High School baseball team swept a doubleheader from Glenville by scores of 17-11 and 4-1. In the first game, winning pitcher Jim O’Hare earned three hits including a triple. Mike Hatle threw a two-hitter in the second game.
• Albert Lea High School graduate Lewis Kennedy was selected by teammates to be the 1963-64 captain of the Minnesota Gophers wrestling team.
25 years ago – 1988
• The Torgerson Oil team won the Albert Lea City Men’s Basketball League with a record of 19-1. Team members were Ron Langlie, Adryn Peterson, Dennis Roesler, David Mangskau, Greg Spurr, David Hagen, Al Batt and Jim Nash.
• The Glenville-Emmons High School baseball team opened their season with a 16-5 victory over Alden-Conger-Freeborn. Mike Heideman had four hits and three RBIs, and Joe Foss also had three RBIs. Tim Karl was the winning pitcher.
• Brad Tullberg had three hits, including a two-run home run, for Albert Lea in its 6-5 win over Waseca. Mike Schultz was the winning pitcher in the first game of the season.
• Jodi Ackland was the winning pitcher for the Albert Lea softball team in its season opener. The Tigers won 11-6 over Waseca. Jill Gaetz had three hits, including a home run and a triple, for Albert Lea.
10 years ago – 2003
• Dale Franks, Bob Stehlik and Jason Eikmeier were the three latest bowlers to roll 300 games at Holiday Lanes in Albert Lea.
• The Albert Lea boys’ golf team defeated Waseca 147-162. Scores for the Tigers were Ross Stadheim, medalist with a 34 strokes, Dan Breuer with 35, Josh Jones with 36 and Ben Jones with 42.
• The Albert Lea girls’ softball team split a doubleheader with Faribault, losing the first game 9-5 and winning the second game 3-1. Nicole Rafdal was the pitcher of record in both games for Albert Lea. Jerri Mondeel and Amber Edwards each had two hits in the first game. Ashley Chrz had two hits for Albert Lea in the second game.
