MADISON, Wis. — A committee of faculty, students and staff is recommending Minnesota students attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison pay out-of-state tuition.
The panel says UW-Madison should seek an exemption from Wisconsin’s longtime reciprocity agreement with Minnesota.
Charging students from Minnesota out-of-state tuition is part of a broader strategy to create an “ideal incoming freshman class” for the University of Wisconsin flagship.
Minnesota students currently receive a discount on tuition and pay only a few thousand dollars more than Wisconsin residents. The same arrangement is available for Wisconsin students attending public universities in Minnesota. Exempting UW-Madison from the Minnesota-Wisconsin tuition reciprocity agreement would require approval from both the UW System Board of Regents and the state.
