Megan Pulley, a senior on the Albert Lea girls’ golf team, qualified for her first state tournament appearance by winning a sudden death playoff Monday over Megan Welch of Lakeville North.

Both girls shot a 177 at the conclusion of two days at the Section 1AAA tournament at Cannon Golf Club. The sudden death round lasted three holes, Albert Lea head coach Shawn Riebe said.

Both girls earned par on the first two holes, but Pulley earned the win with a par on the third hole that beat Welch’s bogey.

“It is a really cool feeling with 70 people walking the fairway with the girls and coaches when they were trying to beat each other head-to-head,” Riebe said. “Megan showed a lot of maturity and composure with all of that commotion.

“I am so proud of her. This really tops off a great season.”

Pulley won the Big Nine Conference scoring title and was the medalist in the Tigers’ first six meets.

Also qualifying for Day 2 of the Section 1AAA girls’ golf meet for Albert Lea were Chelsey Battle, Maddy Dahl and Sam Nielsen.

Battle matched her Thursday score, shooting another 99 for a total of 198.

Pulley and Makenna Friehl are the only seniors on the Albert Lea roster.

The girls’ state golf tournament will be hosted by Bunker Hills Golf Course on June 11 and 12.
