Avie was born on Aug. 23, 1921, in Mahnomen to Arthur and Bertha (Goepfert) Gregoire. She graduated from Bemidji High School and went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in physical education and social studies from what was then Bemidji State Teachers College. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and the relationships she formed at the school, especially her ADK sisters. She also had fond memories of her time as a lifeguard at Diamond Pointe Beach at Lake Bemidji. Outside of work, she enjoyed going camping and canoeing with family, tending to her garden and reading a good book.
Avie is survived by her sons, Larry Kanne of Woodland Park, Colo., and Greg (Sam) Kanne of Hudson; grandchildren, Ashley Mess of Bemidji, Nicole Kanne of Woodbury and Ryan (Paula) Kanne of St. Louis Park; step-grandchildren, Lora and Jason Felix of Hudson; and great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Katie Mess of Bemidji.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; and sister, Beulah Gregoire.
