MINNEAPOLIS — Protecting Minnesota’s elderly residents from abuse is the aim of a new public awareness campaign to help people spot such abuse and stop it.

The MN S.A.F.E. Elders Initiative is produced by prosecutors, law enforcement officials and other advocates who have seen exploitation of vulnerable elders up close. It’s abuse often committed by someone the person trusts, like a spouse, child or caregiver.

The initiative has produced a television documentary, community toolkits and mobile apps for law enforcers. Simple questions of older adults can help recognize possible abuse: whether someone is taking their money without permission, whether they are afraid of someone and whether anyone is hurting them.

Warning signs can include unexplained withdrawal from normal activities, unpaid bills and physical injuries.
