Harmony Park issues to be discussed

After multiple arrests last month during a music festival at a private park along the western shore of Geneva Lake, Freeborn County commissioners are considering whether there should be changes to the rules governing the park.

Freeborn County Sheriff Bob Kindler raised the concerns about Harmony Park after reports of drug use and unruly crowds at the Bella music festival on Memorial Day weekend, said Freeborn County Administrator John Kluever. Two sheriff’s deputies patrolled the event.

Commissioners are slated to discuss the issue at their Tuesday meeting.

The park’s owner, Jay Sullivan, said he looks forward to working with the sheriff and commissioners to solve these problems.

“We’re hoping to come up with a few solutions to some problems,” Sullivan said.

He said he has already decided not to host the Bella music festival again because of the problems it caused the park.

Sullivan, who has owned the park since 1996, said he has worked with the promoter of the festival for six years but there have been more problems during the last two.

“I believe the promoter has made poor decisions to put the park in jeopardy,” he said.

He said there are many things that happen at the park each week that go without problems, such as weddings and gardening classes. He also would like the park to move toward having more bluegrass events.

The park already has rules against illegal drugs and underage drinking. Other rules include no amplified music or drumming after 10 p.m. on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends and holidays. No guns are allowed.

Kindler could not be reached for comment.
