MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota Board of Regents has approved a tuition freeze for in-state undergraduates next year.

University officials say it’s the first tuition freeze in a generation.

Regents approved the tuition freeze as part of the school’s operating budget Friday.

The plan also increases tuition for students from states without reciprocity agreements, raises price tags for graduate and professional students and boosts funding for research.

The plan also cuts administrative costs and funds the hiring of more than 50 faculty members.

Regent Laura Brod was the one regent to vote against the budget, saying that she worries about increases in spending.

University President Eric Kaler proposed the 2014 operating budget. It spends about $61 million more than the year before, a 1.9 percent increase.
