50 years ago – 1963

• The Albert Lea High School golf team captured the Region No. 1 title and advanced to the Minnesota state tournament. The Tigers scored 248 to win, and Waseca took second place with 253. Scores for the Tigers were Dick Jones medalist at 78, Craig Plante, 83, and Dick Davies Jr., 87.

• In the Southern Minnesota League, the Albert Lea Colonels defeated Owatonna 9-5. Jim Borcherdine picked up the win, and Charlie Weathers and Gabby Pierce each had three hits for the Colonels. Pierce had five RBIs.

• Jim Perry threw a four-hitter in the Minnesota Twins 5-0 victory over the Kansas City Athletics. Earl Battey and Bob Allison each homered and Allison had three RBIs.

 

25 years ago – 1988

• Placing in the Region 1AA Track and Field and advancing to the state meet were the following from Albert Lea: Steve Bangh in the 400-meter dash, Eric Palmer in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the 4×400-meter relay team of Bangh, Palmer, David Rowe and Brad Molskness; Sara Hartman in the 1600-meter run and Sara and Steph Hartman in the 3200-meter run for the girls.

• Sam Root had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Ellendale-Geneva-New Richland-Hartland baseball team to a 7-0 win over Waseca in a Region 1A game.

• The Minnesota Twins won their 10th game in the last 11 starts with a 7-1 win over the Texas Rangers. Kirby Puckett had three hits and three RBIs for the Twins.

10 years ago – 2003

• In Section 1AA, Emily Bartusek of Albert Lea placed second in the 400-meter dash and advanced to the Minnesota State Track Tournament for the fifth straight year.

• Advancing to the state track meet in Section 2A were the following: from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva were Nicole Lonning in the shot put and the discus and Kalisha Anthony in the pole vault; from United South Central were Amy Christenson in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and Jamie Klein in the 3,200-meter run.
